Investing in Fundamental Research: Building Bulgaria’s Future Through Science and Innovation

INSAIT’s Martin Vechev and Bernhard Haeupler discuss the role of world-class research in Bulgaria’s economic growth in a special NOVA TV report.

Why is investing in fundamental research essential to building a world-class technology ecosystem in Bulgaria?

Prof. Martin Vechev and Dr. Bernhard Haeupler from INSAIT were featured in a special report by NOVA TV dedicated to INSAIT, one of Bulgaria’s largest TV stations, discussing the role of fundamental research in driving economic growth as well as the new model for research excellence that INSAIT is establishing in Bulgaria.

Nearly 20 years after the establishment of the European Research Council (ERC), this year Bulgaria secured its first-ever ERC grant in engineering and the natural sciences, worth €2.5 million. The grant was awarded to Dr. Haeupler of INSAIT, who previously worked at MIT, Carnegie Mellon University, and Google Research.

Investing in world-class research is investing in Bulgaria’s future – in breakthrough technologies, intellectual property, startups, and a high-value-added economy.
