The latest funding extends the longstanding partnership between INSAIT and Google, focused on advancing AI research.
INSAIT and Google already have joint research projects in egocentric computer vision, while INSAIT doctoral students have completed research internships at Google DeepMind, contributing to work on advanced AI models, including models for understanding physical systems.
INSAIT has also built state-of-the-art national-language models on top of Google’s Gemma models. Our Bulgarian BgGPT and Ukrainian MamayLM series of models build on Gemma 2 and Gemma 3, demonstrating how Google’s open foundation models can be adapted to local languages and domains.
The new support will enable INSAIT researchers to pursue research across the Gemma ecosystem and artificial general intelligence, including foundation models, AI for science, AI for mathematics, computer vision, and AI systems capable of understanding and interacting with the physical world.
Google is awarding $1 million to INSAIT to support research building on Google’s Gemma ecosystem of open models and advancing artificial general intelligence (AGI). The award includes both cash and Google Cloud credits.
The award builds on long standing support from Google for INSAIT. Google initially supported INSAIT with more than $3 million in 2022, followed by more than $2 million in 2024, and additional contributions in 2025 and 2026. In total, Google’s publicly announced support for INSAIT has now exceeded $7 million.
