OpenAI is partnering with Prof. Martin Vechev to improve its watermarking technology for detecting AI-generated text

OpenAI is partnering with Prof. Martin Vechev, Professor at ETH Zürich and Scientific Director of INSAIT, as part of a limited group of world-class researchers working to better understand and improve its new watermarking technology for detecting AI-generated text, the company announced.
The technology embeds an invisible statistical signal into AI-generated text, a technique known as watermarking, which can subsequently be detected using a dedicated tool.
The detection tool is not yet publicly available. OpenAI is initially making it available to a select group of researchers worldwide to study and help further improve the technology.
OpenAI emphasizes that the technology is still at an early stage and has important limitations, particularly when dealing with short, edited, or substantially rewritten texts.
The development also comes in the context of the EU AI Act, which introduces requirements for AI-generated content to be machine-readable and detectable.
