Prof. David Basin (ETH Zurich), a world-renowned scientist in the field of cyber and information security, joins INSAIT – Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology as a mentor in its doctoral program. Recently, prof. Basin was the third lecturer in the INSAIT Tech Series (https://techseries.insait.ai/), discussing the astonishing power of formal methods and tools for building secure and reliable systems including next-generation credit cards, the next Internet, secure 5G communications, and others.
Prof. David Basin has been a full professor at ETH Zurich since 2003 and is also the chair of Information Security within the Institute of Information Security at the Department of Computer Science. He received his PhD in Computer Science from Cornell University in 1989 and his Habilitation in Computer Science from the University of Saarbrucken in 1996. From 1997–2002 he held the chair of Software Engineering at the University of Freiburg in Germany. His research areas are Information Security and Software Engineering. He is the founding director of the ZISC, the Zurich Information Security Center, which he led from 2003-2011. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the ACM Transactions on Privacy and Security (2015-2020) and of Springer-Verlag’s book series on Information Security and Cryptography (2008-present). He has co-founded three security companies, is on the board of directors of Anapaya Systems AG as well as various management and scientific advisory boards, and has consulted extensively for IT companies and government organisations. He is an IEEE Fellow and an ACM Fellow.
“I am excited to take part in INSAIT and contribute to its agenda of world-class research. Its focus on educational excellence in AI and Computer Science and collaborations with other top institutes will help develop the next generation of researchers in Bulgaria. Moreover, as this community grows and extends the foundations of these subjects, exciting new applications will arise, resulting in a fertile ecosystem for spinoffs and industrial collaborations that will strengthen the entire region.” – commented Prof. David Basin.
“With mentorship from technological leaders such as Prof. David Basin, INSAIT can now offer world-class research advising and expertise in the strategic areas of information security, cybersecurity, and formal reasoning, which will also further strengthen the already deep connection between INSAIT, ETH Zurich and EPFL. We are delighted to have Prof. Basin on board at INSAIT and are looking forward to producing exciting research in this important space.” – remarked Prof. Martin Vechev, Architect of INSAIT.
