
Professor David Basin Joins INSAIT to Establish a New Research Direction in Cyber and Information Security

INSAIT is proud to welcome Professor David Basin, a world-renowned expert in cyber and information security, as an affiliated faculty member. His groundbreaking work has shaped the field, and his expertise will play a key role in developing a new security research direction at INSAIT.
Professor Basin will lead efforts in core areas of security, including cryptography, hardware- and software-based security, formal reasoning, AI-driven security, and system security. His research and leadership will help position INSAIT as a global hub for cybersecurity innovation.
Professor Basin has held prestigious academic and leadership positions at ETH Zurich, Cornell University, the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, and the University of Freiburg. He was the founding director of the Zurich Information Security Center (ZISC) and served as Editor-in-Chief of ACM Transactions on Privacy and Security. Additionally, he has led ETH Zurich’s Department of Computer Science as Department Head.
Beyond academia, Professor Basin has provided expert guidance to multiple security companies and startups. He is also the co-founder of Anapaya Systems, an ETH Zurich spin-off developing the next-generation secure and reliable Internet, currently deployed across security-critical sectors in Switzerland and beyond.
As an affiliated faculty member at INSAIT, Professor Basin will drive cutting-edge security research and contribute to attracting top security talent to Sofia. His addition strengthens INSAIT’s mission to advance world-class research and establish Bulgaria as a key player in the global cybersecurity and AI landscape.
