On 12 of September Prof. Moshe Vardi, one of the world’s most prominent computer scientists, gave a capture lecture at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski as part of INSAIT’s tech series.

The lecture argued and motivated the critical need to consider not only efficiency, but also resilience, when designing modern systems, be it computing or social structures, including the need for a new economic theory which takes resilience into account.

It showed beautiful connections between concepts in computer science (e.g., search algorithms) and concepts such as reproduction and mutation, and demonstrated that the reason behind many recent failures such as the Boeing 787 Max disaster, the CrowdStrike accident and others is due to only focusing on efficiency and ignoring resilience.

The lecture led to much lively discussion, both before and after the talk.
